The way Chemeketa is interpreting the revised AA/OT:

• it is up to each institution to determine how to embed the IL piece
  
• we can’t make a stand alone IL class that will reach enough students to qualify it as embedded
  
• we will offer in class instruction as we do now, by arrangement with various faculty. However, we aren’t big enough and don’t have enough librarians to teach each an embedded element in each class that will need one  
    
• We plan to work on teaching faculty how to successfully integrate IL components

• Our director also wants us to develop a set of online IL tutorials.

Here’s the scoop on embedded IL at MHCC:

• MHCC faculty librarians don’t teach for-credit library classes – all of our IL instruction is subject-specific within existing courses
  
• A faculty librarian (me, currently) serves on the Educational Assessment Oversight Committee
  
• Information Literacy has been one of MHCC’s General Education Outcomes since 2005: http://www.mhcc.edu/docs/GenEdOutcomesGeneralFinal06-07-05.pdf (page 4).
  
• This IL outcome has always been embedded in the sense that it’s not tied to a single course
  
• MHCC piloted the iSkills test this Spring to assess IL with a “statistically significant sample of exiting sophomores” – should have the results in Fall 2008
  
• JBAC visited MHCC in November, just before this year’s OSU summit, and MHCC faculty suggested that IL be a stand-alone – not embedded – JBAC outcome.

Spring 2008:  JBAC decisions communicated by Kathy Walsh;begin brainstorming and stakeholder discussions for embedding information literacy; create communication and information resources; initiate discussion with Humanities/Composition faculty. 

Summer 2008: Participate in discussions with Hum. faculty addressing re-formulating writing sequence (getting in on the ground floor for discussing IL within the writing sequence).

Fall 2008: Continued brainstorming and stakeholder discusssions with Humanities and other departments.  Continue teaching approximately 4 sections of Lib 127/term.  Continue current pilot for course related IL (embedded–we began this Fall 07) as needed.   Identify key projects for developing “embedded info. lit” program.

Winter 2009: continue brainstorming and stakeholder discussions; begin projects for developing embedded info lit program.  Continue teaching approximately 4 sections of Lib 127/term.  Continue course related IL.

Spring 2009: Discuss continuing Lib 127-as-elective Fall 2010 and beyond (will need to know this for inclusion in following year course schedule).  Deadline for JBAC General Ed. Outcomes.   Continue embedded info lit development projects.  Continue teaching approximately 4 sections of Lib 127/term.  Continue course related IL as needed.

Many (most?) Oregon colleges and universities are making the conversion from 3 to 4-credit writing classes. English and writing instructors are sending outcomes to Eva Payne who is compiling a side-by-side list of existing 3 and 4-credit outcomes. Now is the time for librarians to chime in and work with Writing and English folks on incorporating IL outcomes into the 4-credit writing courses…ideally coming up with language the suits both purposes, rather than trying to squeeze in an IL outcome after the fact. This is also a good time to think about how we will designate foundational requirement classes that have incorporated IL.   (Michelle Burke OWEAC 5/16/08 Meeting) 

I agree completely.   Just had another e-mail from Rise saying that Marj and Cora will be working on COCC’s transition from 3 to 4 credit writing sequence this summer.  I’d love to spend some time talking with them…may see if I can sit in on a meeting.    Remember, initial feedback from our Composition colleagues was that the transfer from 3 (that is, 3 three credit classes) to 4 credits (two four credit classes) wouldn’t allow any room for IL content.  When I talked with Rise earlier this week (discussing one possible model in concrete terms–a week of IL in WR 122) she felt a lot more positive and could imagine how it might work–sounds like there might be room for further discussion!

This blog is intented to share brainstorming, ideas, conversation, links, embedded IL program examples, and background information as we embark on a new model for information literacy at our institution. 

In brief, we’re moving from a 2 credit Information Literacy Research class–our main path to IL for more than the last ten years–to an embedded IL program as reflected in the new JBAC AAOT. 

This blog is intended for in-house (COCC) use and discussion.   

Oh…and this is a project blog…a working blog…low on frills but (hopefully) jampacked with ideas!
